Ya'll I'm sorry but I have a serious question here
TW; Might have some sensitive topics in here for some people, be wary.
This might be a super dumb completely embarrassing question but my thing is, if someone, for example, writes a story about drug use and addiction, would it be offensive if that person has never been addicted before? Like, they're writing a story about someone who struggles with it, and the story of how they get better etc. Would it not be their place to write about something like that? I'm sorry if this offends anyone or makes anyone upset, yeah it's super random and everything but I kinda need to know this.
Just say what you think, state your opinion. Thanks. Also sorry if I didn't explain it very well.
Not really? Because if so, then we wouldn't have horror / murder fiction. I believe it would only be considered as offensive if it's romanticized or the author didn't research about it properly reply
I would question how accurately they're able to actually write about such an experience.
Although if we're talking about from the lens of the US specifically, the "war on drugs" has misinformed the public and demonized drug users so much that if you've never been addicted yourself you'd probably fuck up writing about it no matter how much effort y...... reply
I don't think its really offensive as long as its portrayed realistically not just, for example, 'I have an addiction one day and the next I don't!!!! :DDD'. Same thing can go for other topics. reply
As long as it's properly represented, I personally would be fine with it cause it not only can show you the true sides of living with that struggle, but also could inform others on it. reply
I doubt people will find it offensive unless it’s dealing with a heavy social topic. If I was writing about an [heavy and real] experience not of my own, I’d first ask the community I’m writing about, and then have proofreaders with firsthand knowledge about said subject correct me. reply
I will say no but because a lot of authors on her don't know how to write a lot of things right. For example rape and that's a big one. The thing is that the author can go about it wrong and offend people. Why is ask because they're not writing it right. Writing about drug addiction and alcoholism is no easy task. When you are asked to write an ess...... reply
