I would say it's because people are mixing up the terms "sex"(biological aspect) and "gender"(self expression).
Sexuality refers to attraction to sex.
Heterosexual- attraction to the opposite sex from yourself
Homosexual-attraction to the same sex as yourself
Bisexual-attraction to both sexes
Asexual-without attraction to the sexes

As an Omnisexual (who gets called Pan, Biphobic, and Bi-eraser a lot) If u took time to look up Bisexual/ Omnisexual and Pansexual you will see those are very different.
