300 Beats Per Second

Ongoing | Shengshi Ka Man | 2000 released

Hmm.... Interesting, I suppose. I feel like there's something a bit clunky about each story. The fur one was really gross, but it was supposed to be. I hate animal suffering. I wish it had ended with some people paying for being so cruel. Despite that, the fur one, chapter four, was the only one that was really creepy. The end of the grandpa one was definitely eerie, too. They were clever concepts. The other two were okay, also. Not the worst I've read. I'll keep reading, at least. ETA: Lol, I don't now if the fifth story was supposed to be deep or what, but... It was pretty mean-spirited, but it was an interesting idea, like most of the others. I've thought about that before, the assumption that we're the main characters of our story. Kind of a miserable, nihilistic approach, but hey. At least the bikini ended up making sense.

Complete | Ito Junji | 2002 released

Oh god, that fifth story made me dry heave. So disgusting. The other stories weren't like that, so it was kind of random how sick it was. Anyway, these were all interesting little concepts with some occasionally creepy as hell art. The biggest downside is that almost every story would stop in the middle of the situation for some long, bizarre moment of exposition, where a character would fill everyone in on what was going on. It disrupted the pace, but it was also just awkward, like, "Oh, by the way, here's a long retelling of the history of this horror show. Just thought you should know that I'm being held against my will and you're gonna die. Lol, kay, have a nice night, folks." I actually started reading because of the nightmarish face that finally appears in the fourth story. That was an interesting one, though it had the same issues. I liked the sixth story, about the earth bound, though I guessed immediately what the cause was both in general and with the boss. Still, I would have liked to seen more on that one. I like how the artist draws certain people. They have an interesting approach. Kinda wish they drew BL, too, cause some of these boys were pretty. Maybe the fact that I was thinking that while horrible things were happening to them says something not-so-great about me, but hey, lol.

Shin Yami No Koe - Kaidan

Complete | ito junji | 2006 released

The thing that always fails for me with these stories is how the people react. That guy laughing at them for their suggestion that they're being hunted, while they all just watched their friend explode? I mean, I feel like at this point, you're kidding yourself with the whole skepticism thing. The concepts are always interesting, but there are little things like the above that stop them from being as good as they could be. The song story is similar to a short horror story I wrote ages ago, which was kind of funny.

Kaidan BL

Ongoing | KOIWAZURAI Shibito | 2015 released

I love the rare occasions when horror/the supernatural is combined with BL. I wish it were more common on a serious level. The most you typically get is crack comedy with ghosts and what not. I want more real drama and horror, like here. The two stories that are out already aren't perfect, but they were intriguing. The first one was more sad than creepy. The second one was undeniably creepy as hell. Even if it wasn't scary in a horror sense, that student's obsession... ugh. Dat painting tho. XD I hope the coming stories are good!

Kouishou Radio

Ongoing | NAKAYAMA Masaaki | 2000 released

Not my fave by this author, but definitely freaky. Some of those faces, dear lord. Even knowing they're coming, they still make me jump sometimes, haha. This one is more cohesive than previous stuff I've read by the mangaka. Less random snippets and more ongoing themes and connected stories. I'm not sure if I like it or not, but it's definitely interesting. We'll see what happens in volume three.

See-through

Complete | ootsuki miu | 2013 released

This should be called "Straight Boys and Unrequited Love." That was the theme throughout, but the endings were either happy or open with a sad-ish feel. Nothing was solidly stated. They all end at a crossroads, where a relationship may or may not develop. I love this artist, so I read it, even though I hate straight-gay pairings. The stories were all right, mostly a bit sad, but not nearly as soul-crushing as I was expecting. The comments had me afraid to even read it. But as of chapter 7, things are still relatively light. The longest story had more sad elements, of course, but there could still be more for the guys someday. I know the wish is for the guy who's in love to end up with his straight friend, but I wish more of these stories would end with the friendship continuing in a healthy way, and the guy falling head over heels for someone else who actually loves them back from the start. Why does it always have to be that the straight guy falls for him anyway, or no one gets what they want and everything is sad, the end? There are other options, is all I'm saying. x_x

Kemonotachi Wa Wana No Naka

Ongoing | Fukaumi Hisato | 2015 released

I don't like how much he says gay sex is gross (plus I hate the "it's okay if it's you" trope, barf), but this is adorable otherwise. I wish it weren't a one shot. I wanna see them get it on. Maybe there'll be another part? Here's hoping.

Poji

Ongoing | harada | 2016 released

Ah, sadly everything translated here is oneshots that have been posted separately. But it's always fun to give them a second read. I love Harada. The Messiah one has never really done it for me, though. I don't like the idea of him getting with either of those nasty dudes. The fact that he develops feelings for the one guy... yuck. But I enjoy the others. ^^

Rakka

Complete | Akabeko | 2000 released

This mangaka really has a thing for stuck up ukes being jerks then paying the price for it. But this is interesting regardless. I have mixed feelings, but I'm intrigued. I don't know if this story is gonna continue, or if this is a collection of different stories, but I'd like to see where he can go from here. ETA: So I just finished chapter five, and this gets weirder and weirder. I don't get why everyone seems to love the second couple. The whole thing is just weird and creepy. The enema, and how he's like, "You look pregnant. Let's deliver the baby!" Like wtf, I laughed but I was disturbed. And then he turned him gay by screwing him? You can't turn people gay. This isn't like being a vampire, except instead of biting to turn someone, you stick your dick in their ass. I did, however, like the third couple, despite some of its own creepy parallels. I love that age difference. And it's nice to see two lonely people comfort one another. I could have done without the weird moment where he tells the guy he sees him like his father, to which the man responds by jumping his bones. But other than that, it's cute and sweet. So far I still like her omegaverse story more, though I'm so worried about how that ones gonna end up. Plus it takes forever to update. So here I am.

Soine Lovers

Complete | Iimo | 2017 released

This is a strange set of stories in that one of them is super cutesy and one of them is about child rape. But okay, whatever works for you, author. The first story is really sweet, so I rated this a four based on that story alone. The others were probably more like a three, partly because they didn't always have a natural flow from one major moment to the next. I hate stories about clones because the concept of replacing someone with a duplicate is depressing to me. Like, does the person you loved originally not even matter anymore? There's an episode of Black Mirror that touches on this very well. It's soul-crushing but it's very reflective of the issues behind the concept of creating a copy of someone. Overall, not the worst thing I've ever read. There are some weird things in the stories that don't fit, for me, but I did like elements of all of the stories included, so hey.
