July's manga / #Strong Female Lead(7)

The Villainess Reverses the Hourglass

Ongoing | 산소비 | 2019 released

The art is really good for this webtoon! I love how the villainess female lead is actually a villainess and goes out of her way to make people pay, unlike other villainess isekai where the villainess attempts to right their wrongdoings and become the heroine. She's very intelligent and doesn't really rely on other people to help her, it's quite refreshing to read.

Feng Qi Cang Lan

Ongoing | song shu 200 | 2013 released

The female protagonist is so BOSS and can pwn everyone she comes across haha. I liked how the author made her fall back down and struggle again, but she easily overcomes her obstacles. There isn't really much character development, but I love its humor and watching the female lead's ridiculous antics.

Goddess Creation System

Ongoing | DAZUI | 2017 released

This is on par with Feng Qi Cang Lan, although I would say the art in GCS is better. The two webtoons share a very strong female protagonist, who can accomplish anything they put their minds to. Unlike FQCL, GCS's lead hasn't struggled or fallen down yet. The story goes downhill after the Desert King arc though. The author seems to be trying to mix things up so her missions are different, but honestly, watching her make guys fall for her was the best part of the webtoon. The Venice arc was utterly garbage, and I thought the lead suddenly changed in personality. She's back to playing mind games with two guys in the Ghost arc but it's just not the same as before. Hopefully, the author finds their groove back to make this exciting and interesting again. Docking off a star due to the declining quality of recent chapters. Ugh, the cultivation arc is by far the worst arc yet, please go back to a simpler set-up.

Shen Yi Di Nu

Ongoing | Yang Shi Liu,Keai Bu Yu | 2000 released

Another strong female lead such as found in Feng Qi Cang Lan and Goddess Creation System, but this female lead is actually in love with a male lead, unlike the other two webtoons. This is a detriment to me, since I don't believe that strong females necessarily need a male to back them up, and this female lead is probably the strongest out of the three females from the three webtoons. She's smart, cunning, and well-versed in medical and martial arts. But she still always needs to be saved by her male lead... The story has a lot of inappropriate content, so may not be for everyone. Also, everyone talks A LOT. Literally, there's more speech bubbles than there is art. The art is great, it reminds me of watercolor paintings. Not something to read in one sitting.

I Want to Be You, Just For A Day Webtoon

Ongoing | 삼 | 2019 released

Wow, this webtoon is really good. It uses the previously popular concept of body-swapping very well, and effectively writes two compelling heroines into its narrative. I think I prefer this over the villainess isekai genre, since it's just done so much better this way. The two heroines are perfect foils for each other, Medea is strong and clever, while Psyche is compassionate and gentle, although the latter sometimes gets on my nerves. They grow as they become more comfortable in their new roles, discovering so much about each other, and learning of tragedies and misfortunes that the other has suffered. The art is absolutely beautiful, the author did a great job, especially with the details of the eyes. Of course, I prefer the look of Medea over Psyche, but I'm always rooting for Medea, no matter which body she's in. She's the badass heroine that goes around taking names and kicking everyone's ass. I hope the two of them can work together to take down the evil crown prince.

The art is quite good in this webtoon, it's above average for me. I like the look of the female lead, she's very distinctive. She's very smart and strong, and isn't easily fooled by scheming officials. I'm looking forward to seeing more of her. I only wish they did a better job depicting her as an actual person, rather than some revered object who rules the country, since I don't have a good sense of her personality, or her emotional connections. There's not much to show her inner thoughts, so it's hard to follow her character. It's funny they say women can't rule because they're too emotional, but I actually think she lacks emotion.

I'll Become a Villainess That Will Go Down in History ― The More of a Villainess I Become, the More the Prince will Dote on Me

I like this female lead, she tries hard to improve herself and is very smart. She's even aware of her shortcomings and lack of power to influence events as she is now, which is so refreshing to see. The only off-putting thing is she keeps wanting to be a villainess, which is somewhat childish of an aspiration. Although characters in otome games are divided into heroine and villainess, once you're living out your life as a character, you've become the hero of your own story. So there's no need to stick to a certain path. But maybe it's for comedic effect. The art is good and the pacing is great so far. I really like this manga, I hope it continues to be of this quality in storytelling.
