July's manga / #Shounen(43)

Runway de Waratte

Ongoing | Inoya Kotoba | 2000 released

I love the fashion aspect of the manga, I've learned a lot about this industry from reading it. However, it's not very well suited for shounen manga. It falls into the repetitive trap of the male lead trying to beat people with his designs over and over, and it becomes somewhat stale. He's a pretty boring protagonist, in my opinion. I'd rather have Chiyuki as the protagonist instead, her life seems far more interesting to me. She's also a very strong willed heroine, who doesn't need the male lead to save her all the time, which was refreshing to see.

Gacha wo Mawashite Nakama wo Fuyasu Saikyou no Bishoujo Gundan wo Tsukuriagero

Ongoing | Haruno Shuu,Isegawa Yasutaka | 2000 released

As a fan of gacha mobile games myself, I totally understand the pain of collecting those rare waifus. It's pretty relatable, but I wish he would grow stronger himself as a player instead of just leaving everything to his OP waifus. He recently drew a priest, so it seems he has a complete adventuring party now. I hope the story gets more interesting besides just farming for stones for more waifus, since that would become repetitive.

The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs

Ongoing | Mishima Yomu,Shiosato Jun | 2000 released

I love the male lead cruising through life as an otome mob character, and building a harem as a result. This idea is pretty cool, and I enjoyed watching him screw up the original otome plot. It seems like the story is starting to slow down in recent chapters though, so perhaps the author has run out of ideas... Hopefully it picks up again soon.

Noragami

Ongoing | adachi toka | 2010 released

One of the best manga I've read, the anime is also great. It's going dark very steadily, as I've always suspected it will. Honestly, I think this manga will have a tragic ending. Hiyori is slowly taking a backseat in the story, and it's focusing more on Yato & Yukine & Father. I hope Hiyori will be able to take the spotlight again soon, since her interaction with the other main characters is what makes this story work so well in the past.

Berserk of Gluttony

Ongoing | Takino Daisuke | 2000 released
2020-08-05 17:17 marked

The art is fantastic. The Gluttony skill is very interesting, it seems to be weak but turns out to be super powerful, but with major drawbacks. The leads are very similar to Kirito and Asuna from SAO, but they have their own charms. I only wish the chapters were released faster since it's a little stagnant right now.

Assassination Classroom

Complete | MATSUI Yuusei | 2012 released

Koro-sensei is a truly unique and iconic character. The supporting cast is not always used to its full potential. The only real distinctive members of the class are Nagisa and Karma. Also the love interest for Nagisa, but I forgot her name since she was mostly a background character. The ending is bittersweet. Sometimes I wish they spend more time with the whole classroom and their crazy antics rather on the killing aspect. It's overall a great manga, but it doesn't make it into my absolute favorites.

Bakuman

Complete | OHBA Tsugumi (Story) | 2008 released

The art is so good~ I loved learning about the manga industry, it really gives insight on how manga is created and developed, and what a tough profession it is. All the characters are rather bland though, and the two male leads get conveniently paired with two girls who are best friends, but the romance is very underdeveloped. I would have preferred to read more about the two male leads and their trust in each other which helps them work so well together. That's why I'm docking off a star for this otherwise fantastic manga.

Yu Yu Hakusho

Complete | Yoshihiro Togashi | 1990 released
2020-08-06 16:58 marked

This manga is really good, but the author ran out of ideas near the end, sadly. I'm not a fan of how this ended, but it's worth reading just for the whole section up to the Dark Tournament. The beginning where Yusuke becomes a good person and realizing the impact of his death on his friends is very touching, and it made me cry.

Inuyasha

Complete | Takahashi Rumiko | 1996 released
2020-08-06 16:55 marked

One of the first manga I've ever read, it's still a classic. Inuyasha is a great character and his love triangle with Kagome and Kikyo was well-done. I'm a sucker for the "a group of companions go on a quest to accomplish something" type stories. Definitely worth several read-throughs!

Hikaru No Go

Complete | Obata | 1998 released
2020-08-06 16:52 marked

I really liked learning about Go in this manga. The art is fantastic as usual for this mangaka. I only wished to see more of Hikaru's growth after Sai left, since the end seems a little abrupt to me. Also, he never beat Akira by himself, which was disappointing... He's still always behind him, despite how good he has become.
