Massacre Happy End

Wow, the set up is interesting, a mashup of Groundhog Day and Danganronpa? Basically, the male lead will need to keep killing someone to progress to the next day, otherwise, it will loop back the entire day that he didn't kill someone. Will he retain his sanity when his sister finally gets the organ transplant, or will she wake up to meet someone that is no longer the kind brother she once knew? The art is very gritty, due to the nature of this manga's genre. Backgrounds are a little lacking, but the expressions are very on point. Translation was wonky in the first chapter, but was more smooth by the second one. Looking forward to more chapters.

The male lead is a complete and utter idiot. All the red flags are raised and the alarm bells are ringing by the end of chapter one, and he thinks it's a good idea to wander in the wilderness when he knows there's cannibals and savage man-eating bears out there. His kid hands him a severed finger, and that doesn't give him the push to get the heck out of there. Seriously, how is he even still alive? Also his wife is verbally and emotionally abusive and not helping the situation. The background art and shading is fantastic, but the faces are hit and miss. Sometimes they're drawn well, and sometimes more sloppily. Everything is creepy as heck, so mission achieved.

This manga has me on the edge of my seat every chapter. The art is great and I love all the colored panels, which is rare to see in manga. My only issue is with how nonsensical literally everyone in here behaves, which detracts from the overall realism of the game, in my opinion. Everyone goes from normal-looking to batshit crazy at the flip of a switch. There are supposed to be other players in this game, but I don't understand why they would know the progress of the protagonist. It's not like he knows their progress, too. Those other players don't even change their bodies each time like he does, which makes me question why it's different for him, and only him? The protagonist is not all that likeable, he's a total narcissist and obsessed with his own good looks, and doesn't care about other people. But you do want to see him clear the stage, because he's the least abnormal person in this world. The pacing is somewhat too fast, if looking from a logical standpoint, but it's likely that way to maintain the suspense. Also, the author has a really weird eye fetish. In the first chapter, he makes the main character wear an eye patch for no reason at all, when he was supposed to remain inconspicuous (eye patches totally don't draw attention), and his eye wasn't even injured in the first place. Now both of his eyes have popped out all of a sudden, and they're just rolling on the floor. What the hell.

It's a Daily Pass Original on Webtoon. The story is good, following a girl who manipulates people to get what she wants. The art style goes very well with the genre of this webtoon. I'm eager to read more. It really reminds me of this Japanese novel called "Journey Under the Midnight Sun," which is similar in premise. I believe A Jin is a psychopath, and not a sociopath, as it was stated in the second chapter. She shows no remorse, manipulates people easily, and is cold-hearted, which is not like a sociopath, who is prone to bursts of rage and inability to control their emotions.

Pet Shop of Horrors

One of my favorite series of all time. Each chapter is standalone and makes you think about whether the pet owners deserved their fate. Art is amazing. Count D and Leon have the best interactions, and Chris is adorable and precious.

Not as good as the original series. The art is also less beautiful in the later chapters. Characters are dull, even Count D himself, compared to the original work, which is sad. Less focus on the pets, and more about how the setting is so fantastical, it being Shinjuku. Still pretty good, but the first series is my favorite.

Kurosagi Shitai Takuhaibin

One of the best horror and mystery manga I've read. The art is gorgeous. Definitely not for the faint of heart or those with weak stomachs. All the gory details of dead bodies are drawn without censors. It's a shame Dark Horse Comics stopped translating past Volume 14.

Jisatsuya Honpo

Very predictable one shot. I guessed the Jisatsuya prevented suicides as opposed to helping people commit suicide from the very first page. Art is below average for a manga. Short read. Some good one-liners here and there, but quite forgettable.

Spider Web

This looks super promising! I am a huge fan of this sort of cat vs. mouse genre, and I wish someone continued to translate this. Art is very good, and keeps the reader guessing on who to trust. Love this!

One Missed Call

A bit like "The Ring," where people die one after another after receiving a supernatural omen, in this case, the victim's own last words via a voicemail on their phone a few days before their actual day of death. The voice messages come from the future and announce down to the minute when someone will die. Then it turns out the cause of these tragic events originate from a girl with unnatural gifts who had been wrongfully killed for being "different", and now she's wreaking havoc on the people who caused her death and extending her vengeance on even the unsuspecting people around them. Except in this story, it's much more confusing as there's too many characters and they all look the same, and it just makes no sense as the plot jumps back and forth between them erratically and unpredictably. I could barely follow the plot, and I was left scratching my head at the end wondering what I just read. Art is below average for a manga.
