The Deadly Countdown

Ongoing | 夏倾时,触漫 | 2019 released

The art style suits the theme of this webtoon, but it's not particularly great. So far, the female lead who can see the death countdown has been unable to stop it completely. I think that's a good thing, to watch her struggle with her powers and her own helplessness. Her brother is underused so far, I'm not sure if he is evil or just conveniently there when needed.

The beginning of the manga was quite good, especially when the male lead and his blackmailer become more and more crazy, doing more heinous things to break away from the teenage angst of boredom. I think on some levels, that's relatable to everyone who has gone through teenage years. But it quickly goes downhill when the male lead is separated from his friends and classmates when he moved to another town. The ending falls flat and leaves readers wanting something more. The first half rode a huge wave of crazy and then went splat on the floor, that's the feeling I had when I read this. It also tries too hard to be deep and it lost me sometimes in its fake philosophical tones. Art is pretty good and matches the theme of the manga.

A dark BL webtoon in the same vein as Killing Stalking. Art is very stylized, and mostly in black and white tones, which is quite nice. The story is somewhat muddled, and definitely goes downhill in the recent chapters, hence why I docked off a star. The ending is a happy one, which I wasn't totally expecting from the genre... Yet it didn't catch me by surprise either, since it seemed it was going in that direction from the previous chapters. But I didn't like it so much, since it didn't give them time to recover and sort through their feelings. Decent webtoon overall though, would recommend.

Liar Game

One of the best psychological mangas out there. Akiyama is seriously one of the smartest protagonists in the world of manga. The beginning portion had more interesting games, the end is a little meh, and leaves a lot of open questions, unfortunately. But worth several read-throughs for sure.

Death Note

Complete | ohba tsugumi | 2004 released

The art is fantastic, and the story is good until when L is killed. After that, it goes severely downhill. So many plot holes and there's no one to root for by the end of the manga. Seems like they ran out of ideas by the second half. All the so-called geniuses are pretty dumb in the end, what a let down.

Bastard (hwang Youngchan)

One of the best dark thriller webtoons out there. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. Everyone is twisted, but you want to root for the protagonist. It's worth re-reading after the first read-through!

Hogu Hagyeongsu

Very good dark BL, comparable to Killing Stalking. Art is really good, and the plot is overall well-paced. It has lots of mature themes, so may not be right for everyone. This webtoon is the closest to Killing Stalking in terms of dark BL genre, although Killing Stalking is still superior.

Obey Me

It's quite dark, a BL in the same vein as Killing Stalking. Personally, it's not as dark as I would have liked though. I think the plot is a little weird in pacing and there are some gaps in the story, but it was overall a good read. I'm not surprised at all at the ending.

Killing Stalking

Classic dark BL, it's very well written and the art is gorgeous. It deals with a lot of mature themes, so may not be appropriate for people who don't like this kind of material. Ending was tragic, but made sense as none of these characters deserved a happy ending.

Okuru Kotoba

The premise was interesting, but the subsequent chapters failed to deliver. I'm not sure what kind of story the author wanted to tell. I thought the ghost of the male lead who died was going to be the protagonist, but then it suddenly shifts to another female character that used to be his friend, then shifts to the female character that killed him. Very confusing. Also it seems that this manga was dropped, so we'll never know what will happen next.
