I have social anxiety myself for a long time, so her attitude and way of thinking was really understandable. I cried several time when I read the novel for the first time because it's so relatable. Believe me, no matter what people said to support you, it's never easy. Someone with anxiety can't just change the way they think about themself on several days. They need longer time than normal people to overcome it. So if you expect strong character development from her, I think it's not gonna happen any time soon.
I just hope the reader can do a little reseach about anxiety so they can understand Maxi a little bit more
