From what I've heard and seen in the comments section—Yvonne, the real daughter, will come back later in the story but she's not the same girl they thought anymore. She had already died when she was a kid and is now possessed by an evil spirit that will be the main antagonist of the story.

You missed the other ability, it lets you absorb other peoples powers. She absorbed her dads powers when he went to attack her, this made her the most powerful ability user in her family, branding her with that symbol and making her the family head.
No, I was talking about that one, too. If it both strengthens powers and absorbed her father's abilities with it temporarily that likely means only those with power can do either of those things.
If it can absorb powers then someone with no power using it would obtain powers, is what makes sense to me. I assumed you forgot the absorb power because that makes sense logically to me and figured that if you were factoring it in you wouldn't say a powerless person wouldn't benefit.
Well we were talking about the transfer of power from Diego to Hilise. In other words the absorption of Diego's power. And on top of that there's the fact that Hilise felt sick almost immediately after that, implying that even someone as powerful as her overdid things with that. Imagine if someone normally powerless did that. Plus if it can only be done temporarily there's gotta be a reason for that, and that could be because it brings consequences to the user. But we'll probably have to wait and see.
