It doesn't make sense how his family shunned him and then decided to put pictures up and keep his room clean. They probs did it just to seem normal and if they actually cared they would've reached out but they didn't.
I think it's got more to do with awkwardness than contempt. His family may have been weirded out at first but later on, might have regretted the way they treated him. But since the rift has already been formed, they were at a loss on how to mend their relationships.
That was probably also why his sister kept encouraging him to face their parents because she knew that things would be heading towards a positive light had they talked it out properly.
