The ml in this arc isn't actually stupid, everything he does is part of his plot to be the no 1 in his sect. The heroine (wushuang) is one of his chess pieces as well, rmb our fl mentioned how she caused a lot of shit in the past yet he forgave her? Actually all of these events benefitted ml as it resulted in the deaths of other strong cultivators in their sect/clan. The reason why the demon can keep entering their territory is also because of the ml (because i saw some comments wondering why he enters so easily). Stuff happen and wushuang is driven out of their sect (the ml deliberately does this). If i rmb correctly he fed wushuang something, which would weaken the demon lord once wushuang and the demon lord had s*x. He kills the demon lord in the end and forsakes wushuang. He admits all this to fl and says that he had once not thought much of her but he has grown to like her and asks if she wants to rule with him but she denies and jumps off a cliff (cant really rmb) basically she wanted to end the storyline but ml saved her body and is preserving it, waiting for her to awaken again. And fl (who is out of the storyline and looking at things through the monitor/control panel) actually gets the shivers
