i love how this story plays out like a tragedy. tragedies show how these characters suffer a horrible end because of something that’s out of control—fate. take macbeth and hamlet as an example. i read an analysis somewhere that said, had macbeth and hamlet live in each other’s story, then they would’ve lived. however, it’s because of this that makes it tragic.

“fate” plays a huge part in tragedies. and i can’t help but think of the author’s use of the concept of fate in the story. time and time again both jinsol and saegye use the word ‘fate’ when referring to their ability as a dare and false. not ability, not even disability, but fate. because fate is predestined, preordained. it’s something that they’re cursed to live and carry with them, along with the burden and consequences that comes with it, for the rest of their lives. because fate is final.

now what makes this story a tragedy is the fates jinsol and saegye are burdened with. had they had each other’s fate, i think this would’ve been a completely different kind of story. if jinsol was born a dare, he wouldn’t have felt like his existence is meaningless because he could’ve helped his sister, and he wouldn’t have felt like something that isn’t supposed to exist because he knows there are people who carry the same fate that he has—that he isn’t alone. and even if saegye was born as a false, if he had somebody who loved and accepted him regardless, if his mother was like jinsol’s, then i don’t think saegye would have been so desperate for love that he would’ve fallen for jinsol’s lies.
