I've seen developments like this before. Usually, when the main character is too much of an asshole and cheats on their SO, the authors usually vilify the SO mostly cause of the backlash. It's like "Oh the cheating isn't that bad, look how much of a terrible person the SO is! So it's justified! You don't have to feel bad about someone so horrible right? Even tho there was no sign of their bad actions before but now you can see it!" -_-
