I agree with you. Popular mangas like Naruto, One Piece, Bleach grew world wide due to fans making it available (pirated). It brought in the the waves of anime and manga to the world, especially the US. Back in my days we have limited anime titles available such popular ones like Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Street Fighters the animation and yet hardly knew manga existed. Now with the internet, it's very easy to access anime and manga. If fan didn't pirates manga and anime, especially into the US, those manga title wouldn't be known outside of Japan. It's due to that, licensing company like Viz or Funimation came to be in the US. Also because of their popularity, these company will know which title to license. So I feel that it doesn't hurt to to get it pirated.
It doesn't hurt to tell the mangaka that their works are popular outside of Japan. As long as you don't go telling what illegal website you read it from. It not like you're going to straight tell Nekota Yonezou sensei "I love your work...please continue doing your best. Oh and I'm reading it from an illegal website." Like seriously, who would want and do that.
