A Girl by the Sea

Complete | ASANO Inio | 2000 released

The art is super good, especially the backgrounds. The premise of the story is that two classmates end up being in a friends with benefits relationship with each other, but the boy only wants to think about suicide because of the death of his brother. The girl only realizes that she loves the boy much later, but it's too late, since the boy has fallen in love with someone else. It is a very realistic manga dealing with real life issues, but unfortunately I didn't like any of the characters here, and the plot didn't interest me. There's no real growth, and I feel like the manga is trying to be deep, but fails. It was a good first reading, but I wouldn't re-read this.

Very realistic perspective on everyday life. The art is really good, especially the backgrounds. It shows how unpredictable life is, and that you can't always accomplish what you dream of, which is a downer, but it is a harsh truth. I can only say that I didn't care for any of the characters, and the female lead is unlikeable. I can't really sympathize with her, since she just wanted to cruise through life and depend on her boyfriend, without trying hard with her own willpower in the first place. When he dies, she goes through some changes, but in my opinion, it's too little, too late.

The beginning of the manga was quite good, especially when the male lead and his blackmailer become more and more crazy, doing more heinous things to break away from the teenage angst of boredom. I think on some levels, that's relatable to everyone who has gone through teenage years. But it quickly goes downhill when the male lead is separated from his friends and classmates when he moved to another town. The ending falls flat and leaves readers wanting something more. The first half rode a huge wave of crazy and then went splat on the floor, that's the feeling I had when I read this. It also tries too hard to be deep and it lost me sometimes in its fake philosophical tones. Art is pretty good and matches the theme of the manga.

Assassination Classroom

Complete | MATSUI Yuusei | 2012 released

Koro-sensei is a truly unique and iconic character. The supporting cast is not always used to its full potential. The only real distinctive members of the class are Nagisa and Karma. Also the love interest for Nagisa, but I forgot her name since she was mostly a background character. The ending is bittersweet. Sometimes I wish they spend more time with the whole classroom and their crazy antics rather on the killing aspect. It's overall a great manga, but it doesn't make it into my absolute favorites.

Bakuman

Complete | OHBA Tsugumi (Story) | 2008 released

The art is so good~ I loved learning about the manga industry, it really gives insight on how manga is created and developed, and what a tough profession it is. All the characters are rather bland though, and the two male leads get conveniently paired with two girls who are best friends, but the romance is very underdeveloped. I would have preferred to read more about the two male leads and their trust in each other which helps them work so well together. That's why I'm docking off a star for this otherwise fantastic manga.

A dark BL webtoon in the same vein as Killing Stalking. Art is very stylized, and mostly in black and white tones, which is quite nice. The story is somewhat muddled, and definitely goes downhill in the recent chapters, hence why I docked off a star. The ending is a happy one, which I wasn't totally expecting from the genre... Yet it didn't catch me by surprise either, since it seemed it was going in that direction from the previous chapters. But I didn't like it so much, since it didn't give them time to recover and sort through their feelings. Decent webtoon overall though, would recommend.

Yu Yu Hakusho

This manga is really good, but the author ran out of ideas near the end, sadly. I'm not a fan of how this ended, but it's worth reading just for the whole section up to the Dark Tournament. The beginning where Yusuke becomes a good person and realizing the impact of his death on his friends is very touching, and it made me cry.

Inuyasha

Complete | Takahashi Rumiko | 1996 released
2020-08-06 16:55 marked

One of the first manga I've ever read, it's still a classic. Inuyasha is a great character and his love triangle with Kagome and Kikyo was well-done. I'm a sucker for the "a group of companions go on a quest to accomplish something" type stories. Definitely worth several read-throughs!

Hikaru No Go

Complete | Obata | 1998 released
2020-08-06 16:52 marked

I really liked learning about Go in this manga. The art is fantastic as usual for this mangaka. I only wished to see more of Hikaru's growth after Sai left, since the end seems a little abrupt to me. Also, he never beat Akira by himself, which was disappointing... He's still always behind him, despite how good he has become.

The Life-Changing of Tidying Up: A Magical Story

Complete | Marie kondo,Yuuko uramoto | 2019 released
2020-08-06 05:26 marked

The art is very basic and clean, since it's not meant to wow the reader. It's an abridged and easy-to-read version of Marie Kondo's best-selling book. Honestly, her advice is not for me, but I did learn new ways to fold clothing, so that's a plus. I don't think that tidying up in the manner Ms. Kondo describes fits my type of personality, but it's great that her advice can help other people find joy in life.
