The manga is still continuing, but both the scanlation groups seem to have dropped it. The first group dropping it is regrettable, but I don't mind losing the group who translated chapter 9. That translation was TERRIBLE. ┑(￣Д ￣)┍

Why? It's not bad though.

You mean it's READABLE. The cleaning and everything are good quality. The problem is that it's entirely mistranslated. Let me break out my LIST of everything they got wrong in this chapter.

Page 15, second panel.
In the novel, game!Arthur is actually complaining about how creepy Stayle is due to Stayle constantly masking his emotions. (Arthur is an incredible judge of character who can spot liars a mile away, so Stayle is disgusting to him because he never shows an honest face.)

Page 19, fourth panel.
Pryde is actually asking if the Knight Commander is training with ARTHUR, not Pryde. Pryde does not want to train and get stronger, because the capture targets need to kill her in seven years.

Page 19, sixth panel.
The Knight Commander actually says that ARTHUR was the one who was waiting for his dad to teach him that morning. The Knight Commander drank all night and didn't drag his drunk self home until just before sunrise; he wasn't "waiting" for anything.

Page 20, first panel.
The Knight Commander is still talking about Arthur. Arthur is a genius swordsman, and even after two years of neglect, is learning everything again very quickly. (For scope, Arthur doesn't expect to be ready to take the knight recruit examination for three more years to recover from lack of training. But he's actually able to pass at the top of his class in one year, as if he never stopped training at all.)

Page 22, fourth panel.
When the game starts, Tiara is 16 years old; Arthur is the one who's 20. Also, why is Pryde calling Arthur "Roderick?" That is his father's name. If I had to correct that entire line, I would say "In the game, Arthur was 20 years old, 4 years older than Tiara. Knight Arthur was a polite, disciplined knight who resembled Commander Roderick. A lot of fans loved his character in the game, even with his occasional violent side."

Page 23, first panel.
Two points: Pryde is talking about Arthur's Good End, where he defeats and kills Pryde (as opposed to the Bad End, where Pryde kills Tiara while Arthur is distracted). Secondly, ARTHUR IS NOT A PARENT IN THE GAME. He is only 20 years old in the game; if he was a parent, he would either be married or newly widowed. The actual translation for this line is that Arthur became HIS father, as in, he discarded his own identity in order to become Roderick's replacement.

Page 26, fourth panel.
It's the fighting style that's different, not the equipment itself. The swordsmanship taught to the royal family for self-defense and the swordsmanship the knights learn for war are inherently different. (Also, rather than Stayle saying that only Arthur would benefit from learning a different style, he actually says that they would BOTH benefit, since Stayle planned to learn from Arthur as well.)

Page 32, second panel.
Stayle actually says that when Arthur feels like they've become friends, he can stop using honorifics.

Page 38, second and third panel.
Stayle is talking about himself, not Arthur. STAYLE is not strong enough yet. It's not enough for him to merely become as strong as Pryde; he has to get stronger than her in order to protect her from those who would harm her.

Page 39, first panel.
Continues from the last. If Stayle can't grow stronger, he won't be able to protect Pryde.

Page 41, first panel.
Pryde is talking about herself, not some nebulous third party. To correct it, "When you judge that I have become an enemy to the people of this country, decapitate me first."

Page 41, third panel.
Arthur actually says that he won't let Pryde lose her way, or let others use or manipulate her.

Page 42, first panel.
Stayle is giving Arthur a job description. It's not "use your sword," it's "become a sword" just like Stayle will become Pryde's shield.

Page 42, fifth panel.
Arthur believes that Stayle WANTS to protect Pryde (present and future). Putting it in past tense makes no sense because what is it that Stayle's supposed to have protected Pryde from? They were just talking about how Pryde's afraid of the future.

Page 43, second panel.
ARTHUR is the one who wants to become that kind of knight. Stayle has an actual job to do already in supporting Pryde in serving their country. Stayle is the future Prince Regent; knighthood is entirely out of his reach no matter how good he gets with a sword. (Also, Stayle has never thought about becoming a knight.)

So yeah, I am BEYOND happy if this scanlation team has dropped this manga. The next chapter is a good one, and I will cry if the translation for chapter 10 is trash.

I think you're a bit too picky to be reading manga illegally then. Be grateful it's being translated in a readable manner. Overall it was a fine translation. This isn't meant to be as perfect as an official translation, because it is not an official translation. If all you can pick out is tiny translation errors that could entirely be the fault of the source material, then maybe you should start translating yourself.

Yeah, no. I DID give the translators slack because they're not a professional group. I can live with misspellings and the occasional mistranslation so long as they actually make an attempt to get things right.

My problem is that the mistakes that this group made are dumb, and makes me doubt that anyone involved with this translation was familiar with the source material.

As you said, the things they got wrong were only "small details," but they add up and they turned this chapter into something completely unreadable TO ME. As someone who has actually read the novel.

But see, Light asked me why *I* called this particular translation terrible, and I told them. I did not deliver my opinion unsolicited. Compared to the first scanlation team's work, the translation of chapter nine IS terrible. The original scanlator was so good in my opinion PRECISELY BECAUSE they had also read the novel, and knew how to translate things correctly. I do not see how the second group could not similarly improve merely by obtaining a proofreader who had also read the novel. At this point in the manga, they wouldn't even need to read 50 chapters.
