Just because he has a harem doesn't mean he doesn't love her. You can't project modern ideology into an ancient setting. In ancient China, there was barely anyone with power who was monogamous. And as a emperor it was his duty to have as many wives to make sure he had as many children and heirs as possible
That's true... it is hard to watch though all these harems are filled with hate, jealousy and malice. I bet stuff like this really happened in harems back in the day. There are some manhuas though where the guy doesn't take a harem and only one empress. Being a woman in ancient China must have been so rough, not even just emperors had concubines and mistresses but men with a noble position (õ õ)

what u said, plus he gained power through the marriages, and to maintain his position he needs to show affection, it’s also really unfair for those women tbh; many are forced or coerced for family sake.
