There is a lot of fluff yaoi which focus on the relationship with each other. Not all yaoi focuses on the sexual relationship (there can be like 10 chapters of relationship development and only one sexual scene) and they're not all toxic lol (Fortunately !! I wouldn't read yaoi if not) . As "Nekoszowa" said, YAOI = SEX and SHONEN AI = NO SEX. Periodt.

I'm on BL tiktok a lot and many creators on there have brought attention to that in Japan "yaoi" is an outdated term and everything m|m is called "BL" sexual or not.

Here's what I think : BL means "it's gay", since it regroup yaoi and shonen ai, the readers don't know whether there will be smut or not, so "yaoi" is more precise because it means "gay SEX". ╮(￣▽￣)╭ This is just assumptions, I'm not saying it's the holly truth tho
I mean that is true but i think op is talking about the genre tag here and i think for a tag it would be better to have separate tag for a manga containing sex and one that doesn't so i find no problem using both term even if it is outdated
