The point the author is trying to make is not for you to go “the maid is still bad even tho she got raped”. It’s that trauma and bad circumstances can make you be a bad person, so you shouldn’t be simple-minded and judge people easily by right and wrong.

If a little boy was beaten repeatedly and watched his father beat dogs, and so, grew up to become a dog abuser, obviously he’s wrong — the thing is that he didn’t choose to be that way. He didn’t get the luxury of good, trauma-free circumstances to grow up and become good.

Everyone knows what the maid did was wrong. But she didn’t choose to be that way, did she? You’re telling me a rape victim has an easy choice in deciding to be nice to people when she has so much pent up rage and anger towards her aggressor, and she can’t do anything about it?

She had to give up her husband and her family because of stigma, all because of a rape that wasn’t her fault, and had no choice but to rely on a rapist. It’s a horrible situation that is going to break anyone’s psyche.

exactly, just cuz you got hurt don't mean you can turn around and hurt others, but we can acknowledge the pain you went through and find a compromise between punishment and forgiveness.
