denseness actually isn't all that uncommon though in these types of stories, usually the female mc is unaware of the ml's intentions towards her or naive to the point of being a child when it comes to men. they keep them "pure" this way by never letting them be the one initiate the advances or court the ml
of course pauliana is different, its not that shes dense. she doesnt see the emperor as a man in the romantic sense because shes his guard her feelings are mostly of duty.
