It looks to me like he was aiming for the affection of Nora's parents (because he wasn't getting that from the king or his deceased mom)--He's a self-centered asshole, but his twisted personality is natural given how unhealthy his situation is (with his parents, and having an unhealthy power balance with those around him as the crown prince from such a young age)

I kind of pity him. It seems like the lack of love and affection while growing up twisted his character. It's sad...
not going to spoil too much but novel shows he gets what's coming to him in the end
