Manga is definitely better and more detailed than the anime. Anime and Golden Age Arc movies are both about Eclipse arc whereas manga starts from Black Swordsman. And if you were to watch the anime I recommend you to watch Golden Age movies. They are better in terms of animation with minor CG faults but well, never watch the 2016 series which actually starts with black swordsman, it's just a terrible eye rape and nothing else. I read manga until the Eclipse then I watched the movies then continued with my manga.

Reading the manga is the best experience ever, art, story, characters are unparalleled by the anime adaptation. The 1997 version or the trilogy of movies in 2012 are not bad and you can watch them first, it's just don't cover much of the story and they cut a lot of things.

The manga is definitely better. I'm currently reading it and it's much more intriguing story-wise and art-wise.

I can't say for others but I first started with the 1997 anime then read the manga and then watch the movie versions.

For me, the music in 1997 really sets up atmosphere and mood of berserk so well...so try it out! But I would say that starting with the manga or 1997 wouldn't hurt in any way.
