Isn't it sad that I also thought of that first, instead of wondering why she was doing that?

Cutting herself doesn't necessarily mean that she wants to die.
In her situation id say she could cut herself because:
- Her family trying to control everything in her life she feel the only control she got is when she inflicts wounds on herself.
- Or the ritual of cutting herself is how she lets go of the pain her family gives her.
