He's alive, don't worry! He put the metal in his jacket so that when Shell shot him it would deflect the bullet. Also, Reign mentions he needs more of his "secret ingredient" for the perfume when Shell plans to go south and we know from Humpty Dumpty's dastardly plan that they made the red death from Eric's pheromones, makes sense they'd have to reverse engineer it from his pheromones to make an antidote.
I think when Shell says he wishes there was another option he was referring to the fact that Eric is now viewed as a bad guy and they have to hide him away so they can't be together all the time. But he's alive so happy ending regardless! No way Shell would be able to kill Eric, they're too in love (=・ω・=)
