I think, and if I remember correctly, he's there to "officially" get revenge on the duke who kidnapped him, since he was supposed to pretend that he really died and that his family was just using a doll to pretend that their heir was still alive.
And also if I'm not mistaken, because both him and Roxanne want to destroy the duchy, and they agreed before hand that they would both get their revenge on the duke.
