The only reason they have power to stand against ruby’s family is because of their family reputation. If they lose that, they have nothing and ruby will have no one to help her and be in an even worse situation. This isnt a matter of just choosing their reputation at the detriment of ruby. This is politics, and foregoing a battle they could ruin them for the overall war. She’s being cautious for her whole family, including ruby. Because running her mouth in the past has actually hurt ruby, obviously. Have you even been paying attention?

She realized she fucked up with her made and with the blond bitch and has been taking steps to change her behavior. She did take what Izek told her about Ruby being family to heart and has been more observant of her. But none of the family knows anything since Ruby doesn’t tell them or complain. Barely any time has passed between the convo with Izek and the brother showing up and they’re all trying to keep an eye out while maintaining diplomacy. They cant just act first and ask questions late without starting a war. Are you a child?

ellen learned fucking NOTHING from all her mistakes. the people claiming she did are delusional because if she did, her first thought was to doubt what she saw and clarify w/Ruby instead of doing the thing she's been doing 99% of time: assume the worst and think she's being soooo mature by covering shit up, and then be emo and monologue about the similarities of Ruby and her mom and boo hoo poor her who is seeing this

there's already been TWO FUCKIN INCIDENTS. the maid and the blonde. and BOTH of those instances of abuse were enabled by none other than Ellen and her skewed sense of familiarity and negligence while letting Ruby suffer for the sake of her own peace of mind. RUBY ISN'T OBLIGATED TO DO EVERYTHING JUST TO KEEP HER FRIENDSHIP WITH ELLEN BUT SHE DOES SO ANYWAY BECAUSE SHE DOESN'T WANT TO DIE.

Ruby's proven time and time again to be horribly misunderstood and willing to risk her own wellbeing just to carve a small place in their family, and that she has a hard time asking for help because she knows no one in this household will believe her on her word alone, as many of them have proven.

Ellen KNOWS this, has witnessed this. and how does Ellen respond when another conflict arises that puts Ruby in a bad light? immediate doubt. immediate assumptions that does her dirty. gag order and not a word of defending ruby in front of the people who had harmed her. SHE. LEARNED. NOTHING.

I like the story, that doesn't mean I’m a fan of every character. I don’t particularly like Ellen. But misconstruing her actions, denying her character development, and expecting perfection is just annoying. She’s traumatized and emotionally stifled, of course she needs growth to become a better character? And she hasn’t said anything about what she really thinks of the situation other than they cant be blabbing about it recklessly. Assuming the worst of her is no better than doing the same shit yall complain about her doing to Ruby.

For real. Some people just can't comprehend the complexities of character development. This isn't some kids' story where the bad guys suddenly choose to be good and all is forgiven and forgotten. Even when they're trying to get better, people still make mistakes. All habits die hard after all, and it always takes some conscious effort to avoid that, which isn't always easy to do.

And don't even get me started about the political context, it's not like they can duke it out at a walmart lot at 3 am ffs. You did a really good job explaining the delicacy of the situation imo.

Also, @Ashkan you forget that the characters aren't as aware of the happenings and the plot as we as readers are. Yes there have been misunderstandings in the past but just because you've realized your mistake about one thing, doesn't mean you won't be taken aback when witnessing two siblings kiss and momentarily go "tf am i looking at?"

Come on now, just a few chapters ago when Freya was trying to start shit about Ruby sitting next to Caesar, Ellen told her that Ruby is family and asked her to stay out of her family's business. And in this most recent chapter as well, it ended with her hopefully going to confront Ruby and maybe talk things out? (it would be terrible if she ends up just attacking her verbally and accusing her but we're not at that point yet so let's just suspend our beliefs, yeah?)
