8 year olds did crazy things way back then and even now are still the same in some countries, that doesn't surprise me. My grandmother was the same age when she drank for the first time in her country.
I think they meant it took three years for them to see each other truly but right now, only showing one year in out of the three after he left for Jing Bei.
Either no one knows or no one was suspicious until now.
