Can't lie, this is better than seeing the same rape trope a million times. I think the ML also likes him, I mean he helped him in the hallway without even thinking (even if he's just a nice guy). Is this a backwards way of doing things? OFC but you have to imagine being gay and 90% of the people around you being straight. Unless you see some clear things that might make a person gay (whether it be mannerisms, the way they talk, their lingo, the people they hang with, etc.) you'll not know. EVEN THEN it's still 50-50 because queer culture is popular, so even straight homophobes use queer lingo and the like.

So imagine how this small, shy, nerdy guy feels when he crushes on a popular dude. He'll feel like it's impossible so he'll try to move on in his own way (but ended up finding someone he thought was a lookalike- turning out to be the real person). It's cute how eager he is. I feel like people think this character is way to immature for his age, but I know a lot of people who STILL act like high schoolers, and I'm 26 from the USA... Which is saying a lot for some people.
