So basically, the thing that Philomel read in the book, and also her situation that we see in Chapter 1, Philomel was correct that they were in a book, but not the OG novel.
They were living in the fanfic version of the OG novel, cuz in the of novel, Philomel was unharmed after Ellencia was found, and then a reader hated that so much they made a whole new fanfic where Philomel was shunned, abandoned, and executed

The way this is so funny tho, like by tormenting Philomel, a completely innocent character throughout the whole baby swapping scenario through a fanfic, it only endeared Philomel more to the EMperor
