Jealousy isn't only about love interest, one can be jealous of a friend, specially when your only friend starts to get closer to someone else. That aside, I think this scene was supposed to imply that Tai Yi now can feel jealous because he absorbed the monster
To me, there seems to be no tension between the characters, just some scholarly companionship. Then suddenly, one is jealous..
