when he was 6, he was kidnapped and the kidnappers wanted money from his family to get him out, but his parents didn't care. they didn't pay the money for him to be rescued, and then sometime later they decided to bomb the kidnappers, not caring if it would hit zhenya or not. zhenya had to fight for his life and also had to use some granates himself to defend himself, only then did he realize he needed to fight to survive in this world
also i forgot to add, the kidnappers brutally beat zhenya once his parents didn't give them the money
