Just my thoughts!! I feel that there is some kind of background story that we don't know about just yet, given certain bits of conversation between the characters and what happens at the beginning. Maybe this is like "Payback" and only one of the characters remembers what really happened. Can't say that I'm not intrigued...
Then again, why would his first thoughts seeing him stumble out of the bar have been "ah, so he really is gay". I'm not quite sure, but the way he is reacting and with the focus being given to the Mc's first relationship it feels like they might've known each other already in some capacity.
