Maybe it’s not the emperor’s fault. Maybe it’s his own father’s fault because he had multiple mistresses so his son grew up thinking it was normal to have a mistress or two. Can’t blame him for that. Let’s blame his father for teaching him wrong behavior.
If the third prince gets his revenge, he should kill his father and not his step-mom even though she’s the one who tried to kill him after killing his mother…

I don't know what's on her mind but one of them is definitely to wipe out anyone that can threaten his son's position. The male lead is just a victim, stuck in between this battle of throne. I think he rather have a normal life away from the imperial palace just to live with the female lead.

Honestly don't get why the empress killed ML's mom, is her son younger than ML? Even if he is, considering ML is illegitimate, wouldn't her son be the crown prince? ML is just the third prince, right? (though it makes me wonder who #1 and #2 are).
Mostly, I'm confused about why in the world royalty would be a meritocracy, isn't succession all about having good PR? Sure, if the empress's son(s?) ends up without children, ML's kid would have a shot at succession, but it's far more likely the emperor would slap a title on him and shove him into a duchy or something.

However, she didn't do it. Anyways, if the story doesn't has empress as the villain, who would be? The story won't proceed since every story must have a villain.

Hera also took revenge not only towards those women but also Zeus’s illegitimate children and made their life miserable. I think there are a lot of similarities between the empress and Hera.
