no theon used her, maybe you didn't read the most recent chapters but it was revealed that the spirit of darkness can't be controlled without the spirit of light so he chose to marry dorthia so he could save himself from the spirit of darkness as well as become emperor. Ethan had found out and only refrained from killing him because he knew dorthia would never forgive him.
