I looked up spoilers and eventually she goes into the library again (after several years) and finds his ghost/soul just chilling.
She brings him back, but since they don't know where his body is or if even still has one, she places his soul inside of her doll and he uses it like a puppet.
He's like this until the end of the story, so people think that he's basically dead and is pretty much just possessing the doll.
He is both dead and alive essentially from my understanding.
