He likely regressed, just like she did. I forget if they were spoilers or theories, but I remember reading comments of people saying he probably used his holy power in their last life to make the regression happen, causing him to get the massive fever he had when they were kids in this life (as it was something that didn't happen last time). It could be there were things that prevented him being intimate with her in their last life, maybe he thought she was forced to marry him, maybe he didn't realise what he had until he lost her. It would explain his insistent interest in her.
