This is a bit of spoilers (or not). I was also actually confused while reading the novel but rereading in manhwa style is much more detailed for me and I understood it. In other words, S2 is their second life with a bit of hint from their past life (like they are reborn again but more honest this time bc of their past memories).

girl that's kinda sad... i guess i didn't focus while reading... i thought the start of season 2 was just an alternate reality, almost like a dream and the story would eventually go back to the first one and it would reveal he survived or whatever...
Yeah the end of season 1 was really tragic. Season 2 is a parallel universe, not a dream. It’s better to read the novel, s2 is finished and a lot of things were taken out…
But Winter did publish an IF story where Aelock does survive
