It makes sense. Tons of people get tattoos from other people's cultures. May not be right or okay but that doesn't stop it from happening.

The tattoos look cool but it makes no sense for him to have those tattoos unless hes either of polynesian descent or lived within a polynesian culture for a period of time. They're traditional Polynesian tattoos and are usually tattooed by traditional tattoo artists with a shell or bone 'comb' to pierce the skin and insert the dye.
They're also specifically designed by the traditional artists and usually with the input of the elders and signify social status, rank, geographic origin, familial history, courage, and power.
(I know this as I'm Maori, which is an offshoot culture that migrated away from Polynesia a few hundred years ago.)
