When the alpha was younger and they got separated he knew he had to keep him with him no matter what, the author didn't explain well but it was supposed to be that the alpha doesn't realize it's love but just has a crazy urge to "keep" the beta, so when he found out that the Beta loved him or probably after the Beta ran away the first time he came up with the plan to trick him into being okay with just being brothers for the sake of protecting him, so he outed the relationship to the press and I believe he purposely let the beta see his computer with the slander on it...but the alpha fell in love at some point but didn't realize it till the end. Cause, well stupid I love lol I really think the friend was actually really trying to help the alpha realize that by telling the truth, (even tho he was having way to much fun with it). He even said the alpha didn't know how to love!
