I believe that in this case changing his hair color from dark to light (opposite colors) symbolizes that he's become a different person/started a new life. Cutting hair usually symbolizes that but it's hard to tell that you've cut it when 12 years have passed already . ╮(￣▽￣)╭
Sorry wrote blond instead of light haired. Even before, he has light hair (Some lighter shade of blue or gray). Not the black color which is Chinese generally have. Still Lighter hair than his abuser.
But even then, these kinds of symbolisms are used with blond hair. I don't understand why.
