The Jpn. don't out right express feelings of 'love' saying "I like You" is saying I love You. It is a big deal in that context. Also the hair can be seen as him be comfortable enough to express his real feelings.

So after he rejected him, had him sick in bed for days, made his worry for weeks a simple "I Like you" was enough? Lame.
