I think he deserved it to be honest because he never did anything to help so he has no right to wield a weapon that’s made to protect people if he doesn’t have the heart to do so

You do remember that's what the twins were like before the main storyline takes place right? And they don't have an excuse to fall back on like being timid or weak as Astalieu does.
Everyone has different breaking points. And for Astalieu his could definitely be fear that if he doesn't go along with Balzac he could get it worse. That's quite a bit different than ignoring it because you just don't care.
And right now the latter part of my comment appears to be exactly the case with the twins.
