I understand you're disappointed, but that's why there's a character development, because he made a lot of mistakes. At the very least he is correcting his ways. Regret comes later, and he regretted what he did to his wife and son. Nobody would want to die by their children's hands. Nobody. He is given the second chance, and he will use it wisely now. I do agree he was an incompetent father.
