What's so confusing about this

Am I reading a different thing or something_ I didn't find this hard to follow at all, maybe it's just me... Anyways, I liked it quite a lot, but that thing with Murasaki left me a bitter taste. Why did Minari have to be so mean to him? Even of he wasn't a specially likable character I felt really bad for him, poor thing. I hope he gets his own story.
