this story ended way too sincerely, to its detriment. incest manga like “camellia” or “how to kill a heart” are some of my favorites because of the horribly bitter aftertaste they leave you with. this one had the potential to be just as nauseatingly good, but it ended up being a genuine romance instead. disappointing, should’ve been a tragedy.
it was just kind of.. boring. lol
I had a few issues—mainly just two—but overall I really liked this story. I loved the fucked up, toxic dynamic this story had and how intense these characters were.
I'll get the issues I had out of the way, as they do weigh the story down a bit but they are also quite simple; I disliked the emotional ignorance Yuki had—when Hayato starts pursuing him, Yuki seems to view it as him trying to fuck with him. It's initially understandable why he thought that, as Hayato previously caught him sleeping with a man and reacted with disgust, but . . . At a certain point, you just gotta realize a homophobe ain't gonna be doing such gay shit on the regular. Hayato was unrelenting in his advances, so Yuki being completely ignorant to his feelings until roughly the end of the story was a little irritating. If he couldn't believe Hayato genuinely loved him, he should have at least been able to acknowledge that there was some twisted sense of affection there.
The second issue I had, and this is more of a personal want that wasn't met, was that I wish Hayato had been able to explicitly talk about his feelings and how he came to realize he liked Yuki; he spent a lot of the story trying to convince Yuki his feelings were genuine, but didn't try to actually just . . . Talk about it. I think it would have been really cute, and quite satisfying after all that conflict, if Hayato was able to talk about how his initial disgust was actually just misplaced, subconscious resentment at the fact that other men were touching Yuki in the way he wanted to.
Speaking of Hayato and Yuki, though; fucking loved them. They were both so, so fucked up. Hayato was more outwardly fucked up considering he was quite literally just insane, but Yuki's feelings and the struggle he has with the fact that he loves his brother in a way he shouldn't was so good. I love angst and both of these characters were handed on a silver platter.
Hayato's feelings were incredibly complex which was something I was surprised by, but appreciated. It's not just a simple feeling of love. Growing up he had been unhealthily attached to his brother which led to general attachment issues, so a lot of his love stems from or is concurrent with his severe need to not feel abandoned. His brother is all he has, and for him that's enough. But if his brother's gone, he has nobody, so he's incredibly desperate to keep him by his side. I feel like that leaves a bit of room for people to interpret his feelings, to ask themselves whether he genuinely loves his brother or if his "love" is just his attachment issues bubbling to the surface. Is it love for his brother or fear of being abandoned? I feel like it's both. It's a very possessive love which is a type of love I'll always adore reading. Possessive lovers ftw
I do wish we saw a little more from Yuki's POV but I still adored him and how his character was built; this story begins with Yuki giving Hayato the cold shoulder and ignoring him, which makes Hayato spiral. We end up finding out that he was giving Hayato the cold shoulder to try and distance himself from him, because his growing feelings towards his brother were something that kind of scared him. He figured if he separated himself from Hayato, those feelings would cease. But they don't. He ends up having a no-strings-attached relationship with a classmate, and that relationship acted as a vessel for him to explore his feelings, with him being able to pretend that his friend is actually Hayato when they have sex. That's the kind of angst I fucking live for, something shameful yet still so desperate. Yuki is obviously deeply ashamed about the love he has for his brother, and his confession scene where he's almost just frantically apologizing for it is something I loved. His feelings were something he battled with a lot and while not as complex as Hayato, I still really enjoyed his character.
Also, I said it before but Hayato is genuinely just fucking insane . . . And it's treated kind of casually, which . . . I think I liked. He ends up chaining his brother up, he stalks him, etc and it's never treated as this huge "moment." Which at first I found kind of odd, but it almost . . . IDK, seems like something the brother likes.
